Roots in Oceanography - Growth With Technology

Dr Brian Glazer has a vision to make remote oceanography information accessible to the global community. With funding support from the National Science Foundation, NOAA Sea Grant, Schmidt Marine Technology Partners, and UH Manoa Strategic Investment Initiative, Brian has laid the groundwork for what is now Hohonu.

REMOTE PROBLEMS

2005 - 2014

While working with Paepae o He`eia to help characterize biogeochemical conditions during an ancient Hawaiian Fishpond restoration project, Dr. Glazer became frustrated with costly instruments and limitations of discrete sampling. Increasingly, Glazer’s research lab became more focused on bringing emerging technologies to diverse projects at affordable costs, leading to growing efforts to democratize access to remote ocean observing technology.

A REAL-TIME SOLUTION

2015 - 2016

With research funding from Hawaii Sea Grant, the National Science Foundation, and Schmidt Marine Technology Partners, Glazer and Lio built an affordable, scalable coastal observing platform that includes a blend of custom sensors and commercial-off-the-shelf water quality instruments.

DEMAND OUTSIDE THE LAB

2017 - 2019

Brian found he wasn't the only one who needed remote access to oceanography data. Researchers from across the nation and locally in Hawaii asked to purchase what he developed.

2020 - HOHONU IS BORN

Hohonu was launched to scale the technology that enables democratization of ocean observing. The Hohonu team has experience with oceanography, startups, engineering, and data science, but most importantly a passion and capability for growing local values to a global scale.
